Glass Types

GuardianMagnetronCoaterThere is a wide range of different glass products on the market today and, for your information, listed below are some of the different types and products used within sealed unit manufacturing:

Low E: There are two types of Low E Glass: Hard Coat and Soft Coat. In recent years, the development of Soft Coat glass has resulted in a significantly higher specification, both in respect of improved Window Energy Ratings (WERs) and lower U Values (a measure of heat loss in a building element).

Toughened: Tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts stresses into the glass which, when broken, cause the glass to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury. As a result of its safety and strength, toughened glass is used in a variety of demanding applications.

Laminated glass: This is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. It consists of two or more pieces of glass with an interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), between the layers. The interlayer keeps the layers of glass bonded when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking into large sharp pieces. Due to cost this has largely been replaced by Toughened glass but is still widely used within the door market.

Specialist roof glass: The trend within the conservatory roof market in recent years has seen high specification glazing including solar control and self cleaning glass. Coloured glass and clear or neutral glazing options for conservatories are currently available.

Fire glass: This is a highly specialised product range offering increased fire resistant properties. Please contact us for further information.

Argon gas: Argon is a colourless, odourless, non-flammable, non-reactive, gas used to reduce heat loss in sealed units by slowing down convection in the air space. Gas filled units will increase the windows ability to insulate by generating a warmer surface on the inside pane, eliminating condensation and increasing interior comfort.

Leaded units: Whether you are looking for diamond lead, square lead, Queen Anne lead or special designs, we can supply the full range. We can also offer silver, blackened, antique, gold, brass or white finishes.

Georgian: We produce a wide range of Georgian designs in a variety of finishes (including dual colours) in-house.

Bevels and Stained Film: We have teamed up with a major supplier of bevels and stained film and are able to offer a full range of designs. From standard designs – featured in our own brochure (please contact us for a free copy) – to one-off designs, Double R Glass & Roofing Systems Ltd can meet your needs.
